Hot Water Extraction vs. Dry Cleaning: Which Is Better for Your Carpets?

The debate between steam cleaning and dry cleaning methods is common among homeowners. We break down both methods, their pros and cons, and explain why we use hot water extraction for superior results.

When researching carpet cleaning, you will encounter two primary professional methods: hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning) and dry cleaning (also called low-moisture cleaning). Both have their advocates. Here is an objective breakdown.

Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning)

This is the method recommended by most carpet manufacturers and used by Alpine Carpet Cleaning. The process involves:

  • Pre-treating the carpet with a cleaning solution to break down soils
  • Injecting hot water deep into the carpet fibers under high pressure
  • Immediately extracting the water along with dissolved dirt, bacteria, allergens, and residue

Pros: Deep cleaning, removes bacteria and allergens, no chemical residue left behind, manufacturer-approved for most carpet types.

Cons: Longer dry time (4–6 hours for standard clean, under 2 hours with our Premier Speed Drying service).

Dry Cleaning Methods

Dry cleaning uses minimal water and relies on chemical compounds to absorb soil. The compounds are spread on the carpet, worked in with a machine, then vacuumed up.

Pros: Very fast dry time (30–60 minutes).

Cons: Only cleans the surface of fibers, leaves chemical residue that can attract new soil faster, not recommended for deep cleaning or odor removal.

Our Recommendation

For thorough cleaning, odor removal, and long-term carpet health, hot water extraction is the superior choice. If dry time is a concern, our Premier Clean package includes Speed Drying to get your carpets back in use quickly.
